Introduction to University

Established by the Hong Kong Government in 1989 as a provider of distance education, HKMU began offering full-time programmes in 2001. Over the years we have grown into a leader in open and flexible education in the Asia Pacific region, and our full-time face-to-face programmes for qualified secondary school leavers are on par with other established universities across Hong Kong. HKMU today is a young, dynamic, full-fledged university.

Research Development

13 HKMU scholars were ranked among the top 2% most-cited scientists worldwide by Stanford University.

HKMU becomes Hong Kong’s first self-financing tertiary institution to establish a research institute in Shenzhen Virtual University Park.

HKMU tops the research grant table with HK$29.1 million secured from the Research Grants Council, accounting for over 35% of its total funding for self-financing institutions.

HKMU received over HK$32 million funding from the Research Grants Council in 2023.

The total funding received by HKMU from the Institutional Development Scheme of the Research Grants Council is the highest among self-financing institutions in Hong Kong.

HKMU set up 8 research institutes and centres to develop a wide range of strategic research areas.

 

Student Achievements

Animation and Visual Effects students won the "Best Animated Short Film" in the 54th Golden Horse Awards with their final year project.

Animation and Visual Effects students were nominated for the "Best Animated Short Film" in the 55th Golden Horse Award with their final year project.

Business School student attained Best Student Award from CIH Asia Pacific Branch.

Creative Writing and Film Arts student works published in a local literary magazine Hong Kong Literature Bimonthly.

Computer Engineering student won the Gold Award of The Greater Bay Area STEM Excellence Award 2023 (HKSAR)

Part-time Work:

Non-local students with a valid “No Objection Letter” (NOL) could take up on-campus part-time jobs for not more than 20 hours per week throughout the year.

Non-local students who have obtained an undergraduate or higher qualification in a full-time and locally-accredited programme in the HKSAR could stay in Hong Kong for 24 months via “Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG)”, without other conditions of stay provided that normal immigration requirements are met.
